“Competitive Intelligence” Project PDF Print E-mail

The project Competitive Intelligence was developed by the CIDEI and the University of Cundinamarca, from September of 2007 to September 2008; the project’s general objective was the development of a supply of goods and services of low-cost automation, to fulfill the needs of modernization of three productive chains, which are potential customers of the Cluster of the Electro-Electronic industry from Bogotá and Cundinamarca, through competitive intelligence methodologies and partnership outlines.

The institutions related to the project were Colciencias as founding organization; the companies Zebra, Phoenix, Coltein, Kuspyde, Districomp, Kirvit and Insitel were the beneficiaries, and providing external support were the Central University, the Distrital University and the University of La Sabana

The project was executed in the following stages:

  • Selection of three productive chains within the 20 bets with the highest priority defined by the Internal Agenda of Bogota and Cundinamarca.
  • The election of five companies in each sector, every company of this group was evaluated in order to detect which processes might be automated.
  • Research about the state-of-the-art of the automation of the processes detected in the previous stage.
  • Pre-design of the automation solutions.

The chosen sectors for the study were value-added Food products, clothing products and Flower growing . The companies that participated from each productive sector are listed in the Table 1.

Listed below are some conclusions and results of the project:

  • A methodology to define the criteria within an interdisciplinary group, was created; in future projects this method will be a helpful tool to define the criteria of the project.
  • In future partnership projects is suggested that the related companies get into the project from the very beginning of it, to ensure the total execution of the project and to avoid delays
  • To the companies from Bogota-Region, an automation projects are very important, above all if those are associated to processes of continuous improvement.
  • The companies from the value-added Food products sector are very disperse, there is not an association which gathers the companies from this sector, this caused some difficulties at the moment of work with the enterprises. It is highly suggested to the companies from the trade to create an association to create some synergies.
  • There is great potential for automation in the clothing trade, however it must be studied carefully in order to compete with the solutions brought from abroad.
  • The low cost of the automation does not have the same relevance between the flower growers that in the others productive sectors, the key factor in floriculture is a good cost benefit relation.
  • The vast majority of the automation solutions for the companies in these three sectors require the metalworking industry, therefore it is recommended to work in association with the metalworking sector to reach common solutions.

The project ended with an event of socialization that took place last September 1st, the event was attended by businessmen and academics, it also had the participation of the engineer Jenny Marcela Sanchez (PhD) with the conference “Technology Watch and Competitive Intelligence”, the Dr. Alvaro Turriago with the conference "Partnership" and the project director Edgar Mendez who explained the main topics of the project and its results. In addition at the 9th Symposium and Third Forum of Innovation of the Colombian floriculture there was a lecture about technological restructuring on productive systems, this event took place on September 10th and 11th of 2008, in Rionegro - Antioquia.
